New England Machine Tools (NEMTUSA) designs and builds custom CNC grinding machines and automation systems for some of the most demanding manufacturing applications in the world – medical devices, aerospace, automotive, glass and ceramics, and semiconductors. We are a small, fast-moving team and every engineer touches the full lifecycle of a machine – from shop build through installation, commissioning, and customer support.

Automation Engineer - Early Career

Bristol, CT | Full-Time | Up to 25% Travel | $68,000+ based on experience

The Role

We are looking for someone with strong fundamentals, genuine curiosity, and the drive to learn fast in a hands-on agile environment.

You will not just be learning technologies – you will be building expertise in automating precision grinding applications across industries where tolerances are measured in microns and the machines you work on produce surgical instruments, aerospace components, automotive parts, optical glass, and semiconductor components.

You will work with our engineering and build teams in the shop and travel to customer sites with our field service team to commission machines, support operators, and troubleshoot controls and automation issues. No two machines are the same.

 

Core areas you will grow into:

  • CNC controls and PLC programming

  • Industrial robot programming and integration

  • Machine HMI configuration and operator training

  • Controls commissioning, testing, and field service

  • Electrical documentation and schematic interpretation

What You Need to Bring

  • Degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical, or related engineering – or equivalent hands-on technical experience

  • Strong fundamentals in controls, automation, or robotics – coursework, labs, internships, or work experience all count

  • Ability to read electrical schematics and reason through control logic

  • Genuine curiosity and willingness to learn new platforms and technologies on the job

  • Clear communication and professionalism – you will work directly with customers

  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel up to 25%

All training is hands-on and on the job – you will build real expertise in precision grinding automation across diverse industries by working on real customer machines alongside our engineering team.

  • Automating precision grinding applications across medical, aerospace, automotive, glass/ceramics, and semiconductor industries

  • Fanuc CNC controls and robot programming

  • Our custom HMI – configuration, setup, and operator training

  • Our machine architecture, grinding processes, and automation systems

  • Field service: commissioning, diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance
